VESTRY MINUTES
Work has not yet started on this dataset
There is only a very limited set here. It covers the main settlement parish, Cleobury Mortimer. Although Stottesdon, for example, was very large in terms of population there were no settlements similar to that of Cleobury Mortimer, and Highley at the time had not expanded with the advent of coal mining.
The minutes record applications for relief and should correspond with the outlays recorded by the overseers. However, they also record refusals. Unfortunately, those are often stated as simply that – ‘refused’. They also record decisions about the period of relief – one time payments, fixed period or until further notice. There is sufficient data in the minutes to be able to analyse these by gender, family status and perhaps age groupings.
Initial examination shows that some names tend to crop up relatively often. They may be the same individuals, or related by family connection.
