OVERSEERS' ACCOUNTS
Work has not yet started on this dataset
There are only eight parishes for which accounts have survived. Analysis will be necessary to determine whether or not they are sufficiently similar in the way relief was applied to draw any conclusions about how generally representative they are, but it will not be possible to draw any firm conclusions on the application of relief in those ‘missing’ parishes without some corroborating information.
In the main, these contain short, line by line entries recording the amount of relief given to an individual. Typically, they contain name, date and amount with perhaps some form of descriptor applied to the individual, or to their state. There are well over 30,000 lines which makes for a challengin addition to a prosopgraphy, but one which should provide very rich data.
The overseers were responsible for paying medical expenses. These were highlighted, so it should be possible to build a picture of medical relief.
